Home improvements whatever they are is all about choice, building
and designing new or improving the old, the bathroom home improvement
is all about choosing the appropriate fixtures and fittings.
Choose the style which fits your taste, your needs, your space
and most importantly your budget.
Bathroom styles have a tendency to mirror the fashions of contemporary
kitchens, leaning toward modern-looking, built-in fixtures, or
lurching back to Victorian or Edwardian times.
As with any home improvement of course, the more money you spend,
the more styles you'll have to choose from. You'll find a fair
range at major UK producers such as Armitage Shanks, Ideal Standard,
Shires and Twyfords. However, if you want something different,
then look at brand names like Roca, Crosswater and Avante who offer
delightful sanitary ware such as glass sinks and a whole range
tap designs.
Plan your room so that all the members of your family will enjoy
it. Keep the safety of your children in mind when choosing your
flooring and lighting.
Remember, where possible retain existing lighting and plumbing
points when re-designing and planning your bathroom as rewiring
and re-plumbing will take a lot of time and money.
Plan a range of different types of storage. Shelving to accommodate
products for every day use, cupboards for occasionally used items
and towels, and laundry baskets. If you have children then space
for children's accessories and toys is a must.
Decide whether you have the space to install a separate shower
enclosure or a shower above the bath. A separate shower will take
more space, but this will utilize the bathroom more as two people
can use the room at the same time.
Period Bathrooms
In the past people have stripped out period porcelain and replaced
it with plastic, recent trends have reverted back to this type
of bathroom and sanitary ware. The return to fashion of white
or off-white style has been the one big success story for sanitary
ware producers in the last few years and now most manufacturers
make products to fit this period. However the Victorians never
had modern bath panels nor glazed shower screens which we use
today.
To get the full period effect in any home improvement, attention
must be paid to total detailing throughout the room.
Modern Bathrooms
The modern bathroom features curvy, white porcelain styling. Taps
are minimalist and lavatory cisterns streamlined and sometimes
concealed. Basins and vanity units were common but are being replaced
by more contemporary washstands featuring combinations of glass,
ceramic, wood and chrome.
Accessories
There is a vast range of accessories on the market to match the
many different types of bathroom suites including; shelves, soap
holders, toilet roll holders, toothbrush holders, toilet brush
holders, towel rails, cabinets and mirrors both illuminated and
unilluminated.
