There is the option to use the many stains or varnishes which are availableand can be used as an alternative to paint when decorating woodwork, these are usually more hard wearing and easier to maintain, but unlessyou are working on new wood, there is a great deal of hard preparation work stripping of the old paint before any stain or varnish can be applied.

Spend time planning exactly what look you want to achieve in each room, it isfar better to spend half an hour deciding what look and effect you want rather than spending hours having to remove newly fitted paper or paint due to making a wrong choice.

Remember your budget, planning, what you have to spend and keeping to it when purchasing materials, you wouldn't want to get the job nearly finished then realise it that you have run out of money or have to spend far more than planned.

Preparation is paramount when it comes to decorating, the quality of the finished job, can be adversely affected with poor or rushed preparation.
